Zotz ! ( 1962 ) dirigida por William Castle

Un dedo apunta y se escucha una voz decir lo siguiente:
¨ ¡ Zotz ! ¨, pero, ¿ què es Zotz ? esta extraña palabra no es nada mas, ni nada menos, que el titulo de una genial y delirante comedia fina dirigida por el maestro William Castle; este productor y director, que tiene en su haber unas sesenta peliculas, se las supo ingeniar para que la gente fuese al cine a ver sus obras, por cada pelicula suya habia en los cines un artefacto publicitario para hacer entrar en clima al espectador, por ejemplo, para esta pelicula, a los espectadores se les regalaba una moneda de plastico identica a la de la pelicula.

El profesor John Jones ( interpretado por el magnifico Tom Poston ) encuentra una rara moneda antigua, la cual posee poderes sobrenaturales, a medida que èl empiece a aprender a usarlos, comenzara a haber una serie de disparatadas situaciones.

Aqui William Castle, poniendo su maquinaria a funcionar
trae una hilarante ironia sobre el mundo universitario, y de lo que son capaces ciertos profesores con tal de obtener su espacio de poder, asi como tambien, siendo esta una pelicula hecha en plena guerra fria, de igual manera se ve el burocratico mundo militar. Aunque esta no sea una de las mas recordadas obras de Castle, es igual de magnifica que cualquiera de sus otros trabajos: The Tingler, 1959; 13 Fantasmas ( 13 Ghosts, 1960 ), pelicula que supo tener un remake hara cosa de algunos años; La Casa de la Colina Embrujada ( House on Haunted Hill, 1959 ), pelicula que tambien supo tener un remake no hace mucho tiempo. Castle en Zotz, aparte de lograr momentos divertidisimos, como cuando el profesor Johnes libera un monton de ratones para probarle a todo el mundo de que él no esta loco y que lo que dice es cierto, o la introducción a la prueba de poderes de la moneda, tiene aqui un buen plantel de actores como lo son Tom Poston, quién en su haber consta de unas 95 peliculas y que lamentablemente fallecio el pasado 30 de abril de 2007, Poston interpreta a un profesor chapado a la antigua, de rectos modales, y que se podria decir bastante adelantado a su época, ya que el mismo en todo momento se preocupa por su salud, o bueno casi, hasta que por ciertos avatares del destino decide emborracharse, este actor tiene en su haber las siguientes peliculas:City That Never Sleeps, 1953, dirigida por John H. Auer; The Old Dark House, 1963, dirigida por William Castle; Rabbit Test, 1978, dirigida por Joan Rivers. Por su lado, la actriz que acompaña a Poston, Julia Meade, interpreta esplendidamente a una profesora de lenguas muertas, su interpretacion, aunque no este a la altura de la de Poston, es bastante aceptable, a esta actriz se la puede ver en las siguientes peliculas: Pillow Talk, 1959, dirigida por Michael Gordon; Tammy Tell Me True, 1961, dirigida por Harry Keller; Se Presume Inocente ( Presumed Innocent, 1990 ) dirigida por Alan J. Pakula.

Los Chacales de la Luna ( The Silver Bullet, 1985 ) dirigida por Daniel Attias

De la mente del escritor Stephen King es que nacio la novela Silver Bullet, de dicha novela sobre licantropos se puede decir que es buena, hasta ahi nomas, nada relevante, mejores son las pinturas que aparecen como acompañantes, creadas por el maestro Berni Wrightson, pero King tuvo la suerte de que su novela fuese pasada al celuloide y fue asi que en octubre de 1984 comenzó la filmación de La Bala de Plata que duro hasta principios de navidades de ese mismo año; uno de los directores en los que se penso para esta producción fue en Don Coscarelli, pero como hubo diferencias creativas con el productor Dino De Laurentiis, Coscarelli se hizo a un lado, y entonces es que llego quién se encargaría de llevar a buen puerto la pelicula: Daniel Attias. En el libreto estaba escrito de que el hombre lobo hablaba, pero lo cierto es que el enternecedor monstruo no dice ni pio en toda la pelicula; la produccion largo sin un traje de hombre lobo en regla, en verdad no habia dicho traje, llegaria mas tarde, y para peor, don Dino De Laurentiis no quedo muy satisfecho ni con el resultado final de la prenda de vestir, ni con los movimientos realizados por el actor en el traje de lobizon, lo que acarrio que dicho actor se sintiese insultado por ciertos comentarios que dijo Laurentiis, y es que esta persona era bailarin de danza moderna y fue contratado por esa misma razon para interpretar los movimientos del bichejo.

En un pueblito estadounidense, donde todo es paz y harmonia, un buen dia comienzan a sucederse una serie de asesinatos; mientras todo el mundo piensa que puede ser producto de un maniaco asesino, hay alguien que sabe la verdad: Marty Coslaw ( interpretado por Corey Haim ), el unico problema es que còmo hara Marty para explicarle a la gente de que el asesino es un lobizon, licantropo, bah, hombre lobo, cuando ni siquiera su hermana y su querido tio le creen, y ese no es el unico problema, Marty tambien se encuentra en una silla de ruedas.

Attias, para ser un director de televisiòn logra darle al film una mas que digna ambientaciòn, consiguiendo en los momentos apropiados un buen grado de suspenso, como por ejemplo: en los momentos finales, toda la creaciòn de la bala de plata, o cuando Marty se encuentra por primera vez con el licantropo; Attias, hay que ser justos, supo sacar material de sus actores, Busey, por ejemplo, esta muy bien como el tio, mientras que por su parte Corey Haim muestra que es bastante profesional haciendo lo suyo. Por el lado musical, Jay Chattaway, quien es bien conocido por ponerle musica a Star Trek: Voyager, logra algo mas de atmosfera, a la ya creada por su director. En definitiva una buena pelicula para tener en cuenta en aquellas tardes invernales.

Al Final de la Escalera ( The Changeling, 1980 ) dirigida por Peter Medak

Como cae la pelotita

Como siempre, detras de muchas peliculas sobre casas encantadas, esta el aviso de que la historia esta basada en hechos verdaderos, lo cual tambien es valido para Al Final de la Escalera ( The Changeling, 1980 ) dirigida por Peter Medak; en esta oportunidad, los hechos sucedieron en Denver, Colorado, alla lejos y hace tiempo. Esta es una muy buena pelicula de terror, donde su director, sin necesidad de caer en los tipicos falsos sustos, obtiene unos resultados impecables para dar miedo, y no solo eso, se puede decir tambien, que la historia es lo bastante original, dejando de ser la tipica pelicula de fantasmas, hasta incluso, debido a lo dramatico de algunas escenas, va mas alla.



George C. Scott interpreta al compositor John Russell, quién tras perder a su familia en un terrible accidente, se muda a Oregon para tratar de olvidar. La casa a la que se muda es grande y confortable, lastima que la misma encierra un funesto secreto, uno que solo el propio Russell debe solucionar.




Como siempre, George C. Scott realiza aqui una impecable tarea, la de un atribulado hombre; a Scott se lo puede ver en El Exorcista 3 ( The Exorcist 3, 1990 ) dirigida por William Peter Blatty, la inolvidable Patton, perteneciente al año 1970, dirigida por Franklin J. Schaffner, El Día del Delfin ( The Day od the Dolphin, 1973 ) dirigida por Mike Nichols.




Por el lado del director, Medak dirigio tambien lo siguiente: Especies 2 ( Species 2, 1998 ), varios capitulos de series de television: La Ley y el Orden: Unidad de Victimas Especiales ( Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 1999 ), el primer episodio de la serie de Magnum ( Magnum, P.I. , 1985 ); como dato,antes de que a Peter Medak le diesen luz verde en este proyecto, uno de los posibles candidatos para dirigir Al Final de la Escalera fue: Tony Richardson, quien debido a diferencias creativas se hizo a un lado. Richardson dirigio: Tom Jones, perteneciente a 1963, Ned Kelly, del año 1970, entre otras.

Las Tijeras del Diablo ( Torture Garden, 1967 ) dirigida por Freddie Francis

¿ Què pasa cuando dos potencias, como en este caso, Freddie Francis y Robert Bloch, se unen ? , pues sale una interesantisima creaciòn de terror como lo es: Las Tijeras del Diablo ( Torture Garden, 1967 ); pelicula perteneciente a la productora Amicus, la cual supo dar a la audiencia una suculenta variedad de titulos tanto de terror como de ciencia ficciòn desde principios de los años sesenta del pasado siglo, en este blog yo ya he hablado de una de ellas: El Club de los Monstruos ( The Monster Club, 1980 ) con fecha de entrada de 23/11/06; ademas de tener en su haber largometrajes, la Amicus tambien poseia una gran variedad de films de episodios, los cuales le daban una buena oportunidad para exponer diversos temas y dar cabida a un buen plantel de actores, como lo son los de este caso en particular: Peter Cushing, que a pesar de tener un breve trabajo, el mismo es, por demas, excelente; Jack Palance, quièn logra realmente brindarle a su personaje una prestancia de primera, estando a la par con Cushing; o el mismo Burgess Meredith, el anfitrion de la velada, quién, una vez mas, esta de las mil maravillas, al igual que lo estuvo tantas otras veces, y por solo nombrar un caso: el Pinguino, en la serie Batman.



Al son de los sonidos de un parque de diversiones, es que nos llega una mirada al futuro de la mano del Doctor Diabolo, quién junto a Atropos, la encargada de cortar los hilos del destino, nos llegan unas mas que terrorificas historias para no dormir: las de un diablo, una actriz con serios deseos de fama y eternidad, un amor materno, y un fanatico de Edgard Allan Poe. A los personajes a los se les reserva el placer de ver sus propios futuros, ¿ seran capaces de escapar de los mismos ?, o acaso sucumbiran a estos. No sè. No sè. Por lo pronto, usted, señor espectador, ¿ se treve a entrar en los dominios de la mente y lo futuro ? Por supuesto, siempre guiados por el Doctor Diabolo.

Aunque al ver uno Las Tijeras..., reconozca al instante que se trata de una producciòn Amicus, es innegable que tras ella esta la firma de quien ha sido uno de sus directores habitues: Freddie Francis; con su particular estilo de fotografia, por que, no hay que olvidar que, despues de todo, Francis era ante todo fotografo, y con su maestria logra aqui unas atmosferas, que bien pueden despertar en el espectador cierto grado de temor, inquietud, ofreciendo una clase de terror un tanto extinto hoy dia; en cuanto a la direccion de actores, logra que estos se desempeñen de manera impecable, aunque dicha sea la verdad, tanto Palance como Cushing o Meredith, bien se bastan solos. Siguiendo con las actuaciones, el Doctor Diabolo, interpretado por Burgess Meredith, es un personaje que realmente da miedo, mientras que Jack Palance realiza una labor soberbia, reflejando de manera perfecta los modismos de un verdadero fanatico, en este caso uno que quiere todas las obras de su autor favorito: Edgar Allan Poe. En cuanto a la labor musical, Don Banks y James Bernard, logran con su partitura un trabajo mas que bueno.
