La novela homonima, que gano el premio Hugo por mejor Presentacion Dramatica en el año 1958, nos cuenta las vicisitudes que vive un ciudadano normal y corriente tras haber resultado bañado por una extraña sustancia, la cual lo ira encogiendo de tamaño; ¨ El Increible Hombre Menguante fue el comienzo de mi carrera como escritor de libretos ¨, comento alguna vez Richard Matheson, ¨ Probo algo que yo tambien sentia sobre los escritores que
¨ irrumpen ¨ en Hollywood; yo vivia en Los Angeles y antes de que El Hombre Menguante fuera publicada, trate de vender algunos libretos para television, para programas como el del Viejo Teatro de Dick Powell. Pero nada sucedia. Fue una pesadilla. Constantes excitaciones y desilusiones. Para cuando se publico, y Hollywood quiso comprar los derechos, estipule que tendria que escribir el guion primero antes de que se cerrase cualquier clase de trato, y asi es como sucedio. Creo que es la forma mas facil para que cualquier escritor irrumpa ¨. Una escena de la pelicula: Let´s Do It Again, del año 1953, dirigida por Alexander Hall, fue la que inspiro a Matheson para escribir su novela, en dicha escena Ray Milland toma el sombrero de Aldo Ray, el cual por ser mucho mas grande le queda pequeño; en los comienzos de su carrera y luchando aun para que se le reconozca como escritor, Matheson vio, de pronto, que lo mismo le sucedia a un hombre que se colocaba su propio sombrero, y se dio cuenta que se estaba encogiendo. ¨Las cosas no estaban yendo tan bien ¨, comenta Matheson, ¨ asi que utilice esta idea de un hombre que empieza a encoger de tamaño, y la escribi en la casa que alquilabamos en Long Island, cada día bajaba a l sotano y simplemente describia al hombre tal y como me lo imaginaba, lo cual me resultaba perfecto, porque no tenia que tomar notas del entorno, ya que todo estaba alli ¨. El director Jack Arnold ( New Haven, Connecticut, Estados Unidos, 14 de octubre de 1916 - Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Estados Unidos, 17 de marzo de 1992 ), paso al celuloide de manera formidable la maravillosa creacion del escritor, dotandola no solamente de momentos hondamente dramaticos, como lo es el tener el valor suficiente para afrontar a una sociedad que no resiste a aquellos que son diferentes, tambien hay una buena dosis de accion y aventura.


Scott Carey es un tipo comun y corriente, hasta que un día es bañado por una extraña sustancia, la cual hara que se vaya encogiendo de tamaño poco a poco .
Ahora bien, en este caso no es solamente lo esplendido de la narracion lo que hace que ¨ El Hombre Menguante ¨sea un clasico, o su direccion y el desempeño de su elenco, agreguenle a todo esto el trabajo de efectos especiales a cargo de: Charles Baker, Everett H. Broussard, Roswell A. Hoffmann ( Rhode Island, Estados Unidos, 30 de marzo de 1905 - Beverly Hills, California, Estados Unidos, 12 de marzo de 2001 ) y Fred Knoth ( 12 de septiembre de 1907 - 21 de enero de 1976 ), como lo fueron los condones llenos con agua, representando a las gotas de agua, aparte de efectos opticos variables, los mismos se funden con todo el resto para acompañar, sin resultar asi, como ocurre en un buen porcentaje un estorbo o querer ser la niña bonita, por suerte se ha entendido esto.
¨Por un largo periodo nunca me puse a pensar realmente en la pelicula, hasta que al final pense de que era bastante inusual para esa epoca, visualmente muy interesante, y tiene, por cierto, un final totalmente atipico con respecto a lo que se hacia por entonces. Jack Arnold realizo un buen trabajo de direccion. Escribi una secuela que no llego a filmarse ¨, comenta Matheson, ¨ Tenian hermosos pinceles y sillas enormes, y varias otras cosas. Para su epoca gano bastante dinero; costo cerca de $ 800.000 y gano millones; pero no hicieron nunca la secuela, le habian puesto por nombre ¨La fantastica niña pequeña ¨, los adjetivos corrian por cuenta de los productores ¨ .
Por otro lado, quien se convierte en parte vital del elenco, no es otro que : ¨ el entorno ¨; todo lo que nuestro heroe conocia como seguro, confiable, es ahora un medio hostil, peligroso, inhospito,
fantastico, en donde a cada paso se puede encontrar la muerte. Sera entonces donde
Scott Carey tenga que combatir para poder sobrevivir.
¨ Lamentablemente
Zugsmith tenia una mente muy comercial y debilito el guion de manera considerable, notablemente en el area del personaje ¨, comenta el escritor, ¨ No estoy seguro de que el film hubiera sido mejor si hubieran seguido la forma de la novela, la cual cuenta la historia del comienzo en forma de flashbacks. Pero esta clase de pensamiento era totalmente extraño en esos dias para Universal Pictures y no habia otra forma de hacerlo mas que con la narrativa lineal, la cual hace debil al relato y a la hora de escribir la novela lo descarte. Al comienzo la historia es bastante debil, y no era capaz de avanzar o darle profundidad a la historia del personaje, porque tan pronto como me fuera posible tenia que ¨ pasar al buen material ¨, ademas si comenzaba con ¨el buen material ¨, la audiencia podria llegar a aceptar mas profundidad en el estudio del personaje del que tenian ¨.

¨ Pense que iban a hacer un remake de El Hombre Menguante, y les dije: ¨ bien, hare el guion, solo que me gustaria usar la secuencia de tiempo que tengo en el libro, resulto ser que harian: La Increible Mujer Menguante ( The Incredible Shrinking Woman, 1981 ), dirigida por Joel Schumacher, y harian de ella una comedia con la actriz Lily Tomlin. Aun asi, como ya dije, no me molestaria si la tenian que convertir en una comedia verdaderamente divertida. Pero la convirtieron en una mala comedia ¨.

Hombre, has hecho un gran trabajo. Yo ésta pelicula, la verdad es que aun no la he visto, primero pienso leerme la novela, una vez eso de todas maneras, es que se trata de Richard Matheson, un clásico. Saludos.
